Protests in Vancouver turn violent

A protest march in Vancouver against the Winter Olympics turned violent on Saturday, as demonstrators damaged mail boxes, cars and shop windows, and scuffled with pedestrians and police.

Around 300 people, many dressed in black and covering their faces, waved anarchist flags as they marched in central Vancouver, Reuters reports. Police, some wearing riot gear, met and dispersed the marchers. Seven people were arrested following the march. The police said the vandalism had been caused by "criminal elements" which had "infiltrated legitimate protests".

The Games have become a focus for the protestors who say the money spent on the event would be better spent tackling social problems. The Games' corporate sponsors are also a target for anti-capitalist and anti-globalisation protestors.
