Jordanian Prince and ITU president join IOC

HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, President of the Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC), and Marisol Casado, President of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), were elected as members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its 122nd General Assembly in Vancouver on Friday.

HRH Prince Feisal and Casado were among six new members elected at the meeting. The others were Barry John Maister of New Zealand, Secretary General of the New Zealand Olympic Committee and an Olympic hockey champion, Dagmawit Girmay Berhane of Ethiopia, Secretary General of the Ethiopian Olympic Committee, Patrick McQuaid of Ireland, President of the International Cycling Union, and Yang Yang of China, an Olympic speed skating champion.

Jordan's Prince Feisal is also chairman and founder of the Generations for Peace programme, which brings children from conflict-torn communities together to play and coach sport.

"It is a great honour to have been elected as a member of the most historic, prestigious and influential sporting organisation in the world," Prince Feisal said of his election to the IOC. "I would like to thank the IOC membership for putting their faith in me and, with all humility, I pledge to serve the Olympic Movement and uphold its fine traditions and values.

"The JOC and Generations For Peace will work tirelessly with all organisations within the Olympic Movement to promote the spirit of Olympism throughout Jordan and beyond."

Casado is one of the founders of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, and served as its Secretary General from 1989 to 1994 and from 1997 to 2008. She was Treasurer of ITU from 1992 to 1994 and from 2000 to 2008. She was President of the Women and Sport Commission in the Spanish Olympic Committee from 1992 to 1994 and from 2000 to the present.

“It is truly a great honour to be elected as an IOC Member," she said. "I would like to extend gratitude to my new colleagues for their warmest support. I am also deeply grateful to the entire triathlon family whom I have been working with more than 30 years."

She said triathlon was a sport which promoted the Olympic ideals, and looked forward to the introduction of sprint triathlon and 4X mixed team relay triathlon for the first time in this year's Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
