Government denies backing Indonesia World Cup bid

Agung Laksono, co-ordinating public welfare minister of Indonesia, said the government did not issue a letter of support for the country’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

The deadline for 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids to provide FIFA with letters of guarantees from their respective governments and remain in the running was midnight on Tuesday.

“We have sent a letter to [FIFA] saying that, for the time being, Indonesia’s top priority is to develop the game here for better achievement. We don’t want just to become an event organiser. We want to make our game better. Perhaps we’ll back up a bid in the future,” Agung told local newspaper Jakarta Globe.

Agung’s office, along with the Ministry for Youth and Sports Affairs, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) and the National Sports Committee, will now organise a forum to discuss ways of developing football in the country.
