IOC reinstates South Korean tax evader

Former Samsung chief Lee Kun-hee has been reinstated as an International Olympic Committee member having stepped down in April 2008 following a tax evasion charge.

According to an IOC source, Lee returns as a full member - but with no additional responsibilities - following a recommendation by the ethics commission to the IOC's executive board meeting in Vancouver.

Lee was given a suspended three-year prison sentence in July 2008 but was pardoned by the South Korean government in December 2009 to help South Korean city Pyongchang's bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. South Korea has twice bid unsuccessfully or the Winter Olympics.

French IOC member Guy Drut was also provisionally suspended from his position in 2005 following a conviction but was allowed to return following a pardon from then French President Jacques Chirac.
