The report criticised organisers’ efforts to offset the Games’ carbon emissions, and the IOC’s oversight of the Vancouver’s environmental schemes, Bloomberg reports.
“…most people aren't even aware that environment is one of the three official pillars of the Olympic movement,” said the Suzuki foundation, which has been monitoring the environmental performance of Vancouver organisers.
The report praised some of the technology being employed at the Games, such as a system which recaptures heat from the sewage system at the Olympic village. But criticism was levelled at the failure to offset spectator air travel.
The report was also published before the organisers began trucking snow to one of the venues which has been hit by unseasonably warm weather.
“The fate of winter sports, and the potential to host Winter Olympics in the future, depend on choices we make today to address climate change,” the Suzuki foundation said.
