Barcelona’s profit halved

Spanish La Liga club Barcelona made a net profit of €8 million for the six months to December 31 2009, a 50 per cent drop year-on-year.

Expenses rose 21.7 per cent, from €166 million to €211 million, due to spending on signings including Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, contract extensions and bonuses for winning the Champions League and La Liga.

“Our sporting success has harmed us financially in the short term,” said Barcelona vice president Joan Boix. “But in return the projection of the Barca brand has increased very much.”

Revenues were up 19.7 per cent year-on-year to €222.8 million. This was due to new sponsorship deals with Catalan broadcaster TV3, Etisalat and Turkish Airlines, prize money for winning the Champions League, fees for international tours and improved gate receipts.
