World Cup venue opening delayed

The opening of Soccer City Stadium, the main venue for this year’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa, has been delayed.

South African teams Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, both from the Soweto town where the 90,000-seater stadium is located, were due to play their local derby there on February 20.

“We have been informed that the stadium is not ready yet and so we are looking at alternative venues at the moment,” said Pirates communication manager Mickey Modisane.

Soccer City will host the World Cup opening game and the final. It is one of the two stadiums for the competition still to be completed.
