Doha to host Qatar Super Globe

Tagged in , , &

Qatar is set to take world handball’s leading club competition to new heights by hosting the International Handball Federation’s ‘Super Globe’ championship over the next four years.

Previously played in a five-year cycle in 1997, 2002 and 2007, the Super Globe pits the best clubs from five continents, plus the champions from the host nation, against each other.

Under the new deal, signed by the IHF President Dr Hassan Moustafa and Vice President of Al Sadd Club, HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Super Globe will be organised annually in Qatar’s state-of-the art facilities from 2010 to 2013.

“Handball is very strong in Europe but our goal is to try and close the gap with other countries,” IHF Competition director Patric Strub told Qatar Sport magazine. “This is a very good event for promoting the sport worldwide and we know that Qatar, which hosted the IHF Junior Championships in 2005, will be very good hosts.”

The Qatar Super Globe will take place in Doha from May 17-21 2010 with the participation of the Qatari champions Al-Sadd, European Champions League winner BM Ciudad Real, plus champions from Asia, The Americas, Oceania and Africa.
