World record worth $1m at Dubai Marathon

Organisers of the Dubai Marathon have announced a $1 million bonus is on offer to a runner who sets a new world record.

The event takes place today, and includes top names in marathon running, including Ethiopian stars Haile Gebrselassie and Bezunesh Bekele. Gebrselassie was just two minutes outside his own world record time when he won the Berlin Marathon in September. His record stands at 2:03:59.

The Dubai Marathon is the world’s richest marathon, with a total prize pot of $2 million. The winners of the men’s and women’s marathons will be awarded $250,000 each. The $1 million world record bonus is being funded by Dubai investment group Dubai Holding.
