Udinese take Portsmouth to court

Italian football club Udinese is taking embattled English club Portsmouth to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for failing to pay for a player transferred between the clubs.

The player whose transfer the case relates to is Sulley Muntari, whom Portsmouth acquired from Udinese in 2007, and who now plays for Italian champions Inter Milan.

“We can confirm that we are presenting a case to CAS over the payment of Muntari's transfer,” a spokesman for Udinese said, as reported by Reuters.

Portsmouth is understood to owe Udinese around £4 million. The deal was supposed to have cost £7 million in total.

Portsmouth has been having financial difficulties this season which have seen it pay its staff and players late, have a winding-up order issued against it by the UK’s tax authorities, and have money due to it by the Premier League directed to pay its creditors.
