AT&T exited Woods sponsorship for free

US telecoms company AT&T was allowed to back out of its sponsorship deal with Tiger Woods without having to pay him any of the money due, or go to court.

The New York Times quoted a source that said Woods’ agent, IMG, must have taken a decision to release AT&T and another sponsor, the consulting firm Accenture, free-of-charge. IMG declined to comment.

“This was very clearly a decision by IMG to allow these sponsors to leave the fold,” said the New York Times source. “IMG is very sponsor friendly so it’s mutually beneficial when something like this happens for a sponsor to opt out. They had the right to say: ‘This is an extraordinary event. We don’t want this relationship.’ ”

The New York Times reports that Woods may have been forced into testifying about his marital infidelities had either sponsor taken him to court to get released from their deal.
