Haitian sport hit by earthquake tragedy

At least 30 members of Haiti’s football federation, and at least seven Haitian Olympic athletes were victims of the earthquake which hit the country.

The Associated Press reports that a Caribbean Football Union representative visited Haiti at the weekend and reported back to football’s world governing body that Haiti’s football federation president Yves Jean Bart had survived, but that many other members of the federation died when its headquarters collapsed. Among the dead were referees, coaches, administrators, players and medical officials.

The Dominican Olympic Committee president Luis Mejia said that the head of Haiti’s Olympic committee, Jean Edward Baker had told him of the Olympic athlete deaths.

FIFA vice president, and head of CONCACAF, Jack Warner said FIFA would be donating $250,000 to relief efforts, and he would personally donate $100,000. FIFA vice president Chung Moon-jung is personally donating $500,000.
