“We hope to be able to provide the fans in the US the live experience of the IPL,” said Lalit Modi, the vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, as reported by UK newspaper The Times. “We will start with a few matches in the US in the next 18 months or so.”
The US is far from being a cricket stronghold, but Modi is seeking to take advantage of the large ex-pat population living there who hail from countries like India, Pakistan and the West Indies. The Times reports that there are an estimated 30,000 amateur cricket players in the US, and the USA Cricket Association claims there are 15 million cricket fans there.
