Agence France Presse reports that the venue will become the first Grand Slam venue to boast three roofed courts. Other developments will include the addition of an extra 1,500 seats to the Margaret Court Arena, the court which is to be roofed, and the building of a new plaza with 21 courts.
“The world's best players love coming to Melbourne and our significant investment in Melbourne Park will guarantee the Australian Open remains in Melbourne until at least 2036,” said Victorian State Premier John Brumby.
Melbourne’s current contract to host the event runs out in 2016, and there are fears that it could be poached by another wealthy city. Shanghai, Dubai, Madrid and Sydney have all expressed interest in having the event.
