Brazil pledges £7 billion for World Cup works

The Brazilian government yesterday pledged to spend 20.1 billion reais (£7 billion) to fund infrastructure and transportation works in preparation for the 2014 football World Cup.

According to Reuters, around half the money will fund urban transport projects. The rest will be spent on improvements to airports, ports, hotels and tourism compounds.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who ends his second four-year term in office this December, is believed to be keen to ease fears that delays and lack of adequate financing will hold up works for the events.

The investment does not include expenditure on security.
