Blackmun appointed as USOC chief

Scott Blackmun, a lawyer and former chief operating officer of the Anschutz Entertainment Group, has been appointed as chief executive officer of the US Olympic Committee.

Bloomberg reports that Blackmun beat five other competitors for the post, including USA Swimming CEO Chuck Wielgus. The appointment will be announced at a press conference today.

Bloomberg reports that USOC’s biggest commercial backer, broadcaster NBC Universal Sports, welcomed the choice. “As their long-term television partners, we at NBC wish good and great things for the USOC and for their new CEO,” said Dick Ebersol, NBC chairman.

Blackmun is a partner at Colorado law firm Holme, Roberts & Owen LLP, and has previously been USOC’s general counsel and also CEO for a short period in 2000. He was an adviser on London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympics.
