Four-nation hockey tournament cancelled

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has refused permission for a four-nation tournament that Hockey India had planned for this month.

The Times of India reports that HI president AK Mattoo denied that the cancellation was caused by delays building the proposed venue – the National Stadium, which is due to host matches of the hockey World Cup, which begins on February 28.

However Mattoo gave no other reason for the cancellation.

“We have cancelled the four-nation tournament scheduled this month because FIH did not give us the approval to organise the tournament,” he said.

“In place of that, a bilateral series will be organised very soon,” said Mattoo. “We are in talks with France for that purpose. As soon as we arrive on any decision, we will let you know.”

The four-nation tournament was due to be held at the National Stadium, beginning January 13.
