Giro and Washington DC reach 'tentative agreement'

Organisers of the Giro d'Italia have met with city authorities in Washington DC, USA, and tentatively agreed to host the opening stages of the famous cycling race in the city in 2012.

Washington's mayor, Adrian M Fenty, met with Giro officials last week, including during a lunchtime bicycle ride on Thursday.

The Giro's race director Angelo Zomegnan said: “We can’t say it will 100 percent start here, but we think that it is very, very possible and we’re moving forward to work together.

“There are a lot of things that must happen in the next few weeks before we can say it’s 100 percent. But I think it looks good.”

Fenty said: “I believe it would be one of the most fabulous events ever to happen in Washington, D.C., from an athletic discipline standpoint.

"This city is a world-class city, so we would be welcoming a world-class race inside of our borders.”
