Spurs kick into Asia

English Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur is sending coaching staff to Singapore as part of a programme which aims to unearth new talent, but also strengthen football in Asia.

Reuters reports that Tottenham begins a nine-day coaching course this week headed by former club captain and England international Gary Mabbutt which will educate both players and coaches.

Tottenham hopes to bring the course to other Asian countries.

"I think it is quite a brave decision by Tottenham because it is quite easy to use your name to go around the world and collect a payday," Mabbutt told Reuters.

"But what we are trying to do is bring the coaches we use at home and bring those same standards where we go. We are trying to make a serious development programme.

"If we get a player that comes through from Asia who is good enough to come and play for Tottenham Hotspur then great, but if not the work we are doing will leave a long-lasting legacy."

Reuters reports that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has previously expressed concern about European teams' touring Asia, primarily for commercial gain. Spurs' initiative has the backing of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), and Mabbutt said the club recognises it must create some sort of sustainable football development initiative that does not necessarilly bring it commercial gain.
