Hofstra has produced National Football League stars Wayne Chebret and Marques Colston, but said it was cutting its team because of high costs and low interest. Boston’s Northeastern University announced earlier this week it would be dropping its American football team after 74 years.
Bloomberg reports that the school’s board said it would redirect the resources formerly used by the team “toward academic initiatives and need-based scholarships”.
Hofstra University president Stuart Rabinowitz said that the team was the university’s largest and most-expensive sports programme, and the university “could not continue to justify the expense of football compared to the benefits it brought”.
