Audi to buy stake in Bayern Munich

German car maker Audi is to acquire a 9.09 per cent stake of Bundesliga club Bayern Munich in a three-step process between March 2010 and July 2011.

Audi, which has been Bayern’s automotive partner since 2002, will purchase 2.5 million shares at a total price of €90 million ($135.64 million).

The company said the move would strengthen the global presence of both brands, including the promotion of young talent in academies to be organised around the world.

Bayern Munich AG is the sole owner of the Allianz Arena and the deal will help the club pay off the stadium, according to the Associated Press.

Sports apparel company adidas owns 10 per cent of Bayern.
