Vodafone ends six-year Waikato sponsorship

Vodafone, the second largest mobile telecom group in the world, has ended its relationship of New Zealand rugby union side Waikato after six years as the side’s lead sponsor.

Vodafone will work with the Waikato Rugby union (WRU) to assist in finding a new sponsor and will continue its support by providing free SMS alerts service for fans.

"We've enjoyed a great partnership with Waikato Rugby, the highlight being the Air New Zealand Cup win in 2006," said Vodafone's head of sponsorship Richard Howarth.

"However every year we review all our sponsorships and look at our overall portfolio, and we have taken the decision to consolidate our activities in 2010 in order to be more effective in delivering benefits and fantastic experiences to our customers, and fans of sport and music."
