Sochi Winter Olympics environmental strategy published

The organisers of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi have published an environmental strategy drawn up in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Russian Government.

The organisers say the strategy will see the natural environment in the region surrounding Sochi not just protected, but enhanced.

The strategy was presented after a meeting at the Russian government’s White House between Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Kozak, and UNEP official representative, Theodore Oben.

“Environmental projects during preparations for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games are an absolute priority for the Russian Government,” said Kozak. “This isn’t just a question about the future, results are being seen today.”

The UNEP’s Oben said: “Sochi 2014’s environmental strategy is a clear sign that it is eager to integrate environmental aspects into Games preparations. The Environmental strategy would guide various stakeholders to insure that the Games are truly in harmony with nature.”
