Sponsor gives US golfer ownership stake instead of cash

US golfer Ryan Moore, the 2004 US Amateur champion, has signed an unusual agreement with sponsor Scratch Golf that will see him take a stake in the company, with the opportunity to earn performance bonuses and additional payments.

Moore played on the US PGA Tour last year without a club endorsement deal – the recession has caused many large club manufacturers to cut back on endorsements. Scratch Golf chief executive Ari Techner told Bloomberg that his company could not afford to spend millions of dollars sponsoring Moore, but saw their new deal as a long-term investment that would hopefully see him using the clubs for the rest of his career.

Moore’s father told Bloomberg that the golfer was simply betting on his own success as a way to improve the company’s sales.

“He saw that they could help him and he believes that he can help these guys gain presence in the world of golf,” Mike Moore said. “Most folks have never heard of this company.”
