US comedian to fill Olympic team sponsor gap

Stephen Colbert, the host of a comedy television programme on US television, has launched a campaign to raise cash from viewers to help the US Olympic speedskating team after its main sponsor pulled out due to bankruptcy.

Blooomberg reports that the team will have “The Colbert Nation” emblazoned on the front of their uniforms at next year’s Winter Olympics, and Americans are being asked to donate money to the team’s cause.

Colbert has previously raised nearly $250,000 in a similar two-year campaign to help wounded US military personnel and their families.

“We must ensure that it is America’s 38-inch thighs on that medal platform,” he said in a statement.

The bankruptcy of Dutch bank DSB Bank NV has left the team without $300,000 of planned sponsorship cash.
