Tour of Britain 2009 draws record viewership

SweetSpot, organisers of The Tour of Britain cycling event, has announced the 2009 version attracted over one million spectators and three million television viewers over the course of eight stages.

The Tour of Britain made its way from the Grand Depart in Scunthorpe on September 12, finishing in London on September 19. Over 150,000 people lined the streets for the final stage in the capital.

“The 2009 race was a great success. The crowd numbers, and the number of school children that attended the race were a big step forward for us, and this shows that cycling as a sport is growing exponentially in its national popularity. We at The Tour of Britain are extremely pleased to be a key part of this process”, said Hugh Roberts, Tour of Britain CEO.

A daily hour-long television show was broadcast on ITV4 over the eight days of the event.
