Scudamore: Celtic and Rangers won’t join the Premier League

The prospect of Rangers and Celtic being allowed to join the English Premier League was dealt a major blow last night when Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said he did not foresee the clubs being allowed to make the move.

Scudamore said he didn’t see the existing 20 clubs welcoming the move and that he personally is against it.

"I don't think it's a serious proposition for a whole number of reasons," he said on the ESPN show Between The Lines. "Scottish football is Scottish football. For a traditionalist like me, that's where the Old Firm should play.

"I see the benefits for Celtic and Rangers if they moved to our Premier League but I don't think our 20 clubs are going to vote to allow these clubs into our league."

Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside is the driving force behind a two-tier English Premier League idea that could pave the way for Celtic and Rangers to play in England. He will raise the issue at a league meeting in November.
