CHL comes in from the cold

European club ice hockey competition the Champions Hockey League is aiming for a 2010 comeback after the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) agreed a deal to secure the participation of clubs from six European leagues.

The leagues covered in the new deal are in the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland. The IIHF is also aiming to get clubs from Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League involved again.

The 2009-10 edition of the competition was cancelled earlier this year after key investor Gazprom, the Russian energy giant, withdrew its financial support. The IIHF is now looking for new investors to back next season’s edition.

The 12 clubs that were due to play in this season’s CHL are to be compensated for the cancellation of the tournament.
