New NBA referees deal expected to stick

The NBA and its referees’ union agreed a new contract yesterday which is expected to see the league’s usual officials back on the court when the regular season starts next week.

The 57 members of the referees union will vote on the deal on Friday, but the International Herald Tribune reports that a source close to the negotiations has said it was highly likely to be approved.

The latest agreement was hammered out at a meeting including NBA Commissioner David Stern and the union’s lead negotiator, Lamell McMorris, who had both withdrawn from the negotiations earlier in the process after a public row conducted in the press.

If ratified, the agreement will end a lockout that began on September 18 when the referees board members voted 43-14 against the deal proposed at that time.
