Golf and Rugby face vote for Olympics inclusion

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will vote today whether rugby and golf get added to the Olympic Summer Games programme for 2016.

The vote takes place at around 1pm CET at the IOC session in Copenhagen.

Some papers, including the UK’s Daily Telegraph and Ireland’s Irish Times, are this morning predicting that both sports will get the nod from the IOC.

Rugby, which proposes to run its 7-a-side format at the Games, is regarded by most commentators as a certainty to get on the programme.

This morning’s optimism in the papers for both sports follows reports coming out of Copenhagen earlier in the week suggesting that golf may not get voted for, one of the reasons being that some IOC members may vote against it in protest at not having been given a bigger say in the process. The IOC’s executive board cut down the number of candidate sports from seven to two prior to today’s vote of the full IOC membership.
