Record-breaking $3.8bn TV revenues for Olympics

The International Olympic Committee has earned a record $3.8 billion in television revenues from the 2010 to 2012 Olympic Games package, a $1.2 billion increase from the 2006 to 2008 cycle.

Reuters reports that IOC chief Jacques Rogge said the 2010-2012 figure would be beaten by that for 2014-2016. He told the IOC session underway in Copenhagen that deals worth $920 million were already in place for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics. Deals are yet to be struck for the period in the US, France, Germany and the UK.

“By the end of 2008 we were facing the most severe crisis for decades. We maximised our revenues. Our income from marketing and television has increased significantly,” Rogge said.
