Rome and Venice want 2020 Olympics

The mayors of Italian cities Rome and Venice have announced they both want to bid to host the 2020 Olympics.

UK newspaper the Daily Mail reports that Giovanni Petrucci, the president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), has predicted a return of the Olympics to Europe in 2020, after the decision to award the 2016 Games to Rio in Brazil.

“I've spoken about it with the Italian IOC members, who are always influential in terms of numbers and prestige,” he said.

“The time has come for an Italian bid for the 2020 Games.”

Rome lost out to Athens in bidding for the 2004 Olympics.

CONI will decide which city will bid for the Olympics next year, and the host of the 2020 Games will be announced in 2013.
