Tiger Woods becomes first billion-dollar sportsman

Golfer Tiger Woods has become the first billion-dollar sportsman after 13 years as a professional golfer, according to US business magazine Forbes.

According to calculations, the $10million bonus Woods received for winning the FedEx Cup this week pushed him over financial mark in total career earnings. The 34-year-old earned an estimated $895 million up to the beginning of 2009.

The bulk of Woods' earnings come from his long-term Nike endorsement, which pays him over $30 million a year, with around a third of total earnings coming from sponsorship, advertising and endorsements with brands also including Accenture, Gillette, Gatorade, Electronic Arts and Tag Heuer. He also makes around $10 million for each golf course he designs.

Woods has been the world's highest paid sportsman since 2002 when he overtook Formula One's Michael Schumacher.
