New Russian hockey channel launches this week

A new hockey-devoted TV channel called CHL-TV with coverage from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) will make its debut in Russia on Thursday October 1.

According to www.broadbandtvnews.com, Russian news paper Kommersant reports that the service will be operated by the DTH platform NTV-Plus and the KHL.

The North American National Hockey League (NHL) launched its own speciality TV channel in October 2007, showing both live coverage and magazine programming.

It is understood however that the CHL-TV will operate a different business model to the NHL Network as rather than the league receiving a fee for the right to broadcast matches, it will make revenues from advertising and by selling content to foreign broadcasters.

CHL-TV is expected to be unprofitable for the first two years of its operation.
