Obama keeps open option of Copenhagen IOC visit

An advance team of US officials is in Copenhagen this week to prepare for a possible visit by US president Barack Obama to the IOC congress at which the 2016 Summer Olympics host will be announced.

Obama’s wife Michelle is leading a US delegation to Copenhagen – the president had said in September that he was too occupied with the US health-care overhaul debate to visit himself.

But Bloomberg reports that an official told it: “He (President Obama) is preserving his options.”

Obama would only be able to visit Copenhagen for one day – that of the announcement of the winning bid city – not for the final days of lobbying that typically occur at IOC Congresses. If he does not appear, Chicago will be the only one of the four cities – including Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro – without its head of state present.
