Reuters reports that London’s Mayor Boris Johnson is making money-saving efforts as the Olympic budget has spiralled from £2.4 billion to £9.3 billion, and has already rejected plans for one 6,000 seat arena.
By moving the badminton event, and rhythmic gymnastics, from a proposed temporary venue near the Olympic Park to Wembley the Mayor believes £20 million could be saved.
But Badminton officials say the travel time across London would damage athlete’s chances in the competition.
"Everyone knows our intention is to stay in the Olympic Park or be as close to the Park as we possibly can," said Adrian Christy, chief executive of Badminton England, speaking to Reuters.
"We are not encouraging conversation about using Wembley Arena because we do not believe it is the right arena for us."
The amateur International Boxing Association has also rejected a move to Wembley for the same reason.
