ICC to hear Test cricket championship proposal

Former New Zealand cricket captain Martin Crowe will present a plan to save Test cricket, involving an annual knockout Test championship and day-night tests.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Crowe, a member of the MCC’s World Cricket Committee will present the plan to the International Cricket Council in November.

“If we don't do something soon then the bottom teams in particular will wilt away and the bottom will fall out of the pinnacle format of the game,” he said. “Test cricket needs a meaning and a new motivation among all these other shorter version comps that are scheduled every year. It needs a Test champion, annually.”

A ball injected with pink dye, making it suitable for day-night play, is near the end of development.

But one of the biggest stumbling blocks for the plan is expected to be opposition from the Indian and England cricket boards, as it would mean them splitting broadcast rights profits.
