US Open is “highest-attended annual sporting event”

This year’s US tennis Open broke five attendance records in its first week and attracted an overall record 721,059 fans over the course of the competition, the US Tennis Association (USTA) said yesterday.

According to Bloomberg, the total attendance was an increase of 832 on last year’s record, making the US Open “the world’s highest-attended annual sporting event.”

The USTA said five attendance records were set in the first week: the top Opening Day session, top Opening Day combined sessions, top single session, top combined and first-week attendance of 423,427.
