Sochi 2014 joins UN 'Seal the Deal' coalition

The Sochi 2014 Organising Committee yesterday announced it has joined ‘Seal The Deal!’ – the United Nations-led campaign to galvanise political will and public support for a comprehensive climate change agreement.

Sochi 2014 will join the campaign to reach a global consensus on the environment at the COP 15 Conference in Copenhagen in December.

The announcement came while officials from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) were visiting Sochi 2014. During the trip, the UNEP held its first consultations with Sochi 2014 on the implementation of environmental standards that are currently being applied in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

“We see that the Russian organisers want to achieve high ecological standards during Games preparation. Taking into account our first consultations, we can say that Sochi 2014 is on the right track,” said Hartmut Stahl, Head of the UNEP ‘Sports and Environment Programme’.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, Sochi 2014 President and CEO, added: “We have started to achieve an active collaboration with the UNEP after a very short period of our relationship. Sochi 2014 has set ambitious targets, not only to protect but also enhance the Krasnodar Region’s unique environment. I am delighted that the UNEP have, once again, pledged their support to help us achieve this target.”

Alongside Sochi 2014, other stakeholders in the 2014 Games took part in the meetings with the UNEP including the ‘Olympstroy’ State Corporation, WWF Russia, Federal Ministries and Departments, investors, design and construction contractors.
