South Africa federation contest must not impede World Cup preparations, warns FIFA

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has warned the South African football federation that a bitter presidential election campaign must not get in the way of preparations for the 2010 World Cup.

The battle for presidency of the South African federation is being fought between chief executive Danny Jordaan and World Cup organising committee chairman Irvin Khoza. Valcke said if either won the election they would not be able to carry on in their current positions on the World Cup organising committee.

USA Today reports that both men are powerful figures in the game in South Africa, and the federation has been tainted over the years by allegations of corruption and struggles for personal gain by officials.

Valcke told reporters at a board meeting of the organising committee that nothing must put the World Cup "in danger", and that FIFA would stand ready to intervene if it thought the committee was not up to the job of organising the event.
