Chinese bid for 2018 Winter Olympics will have government backing

The Chinese sports minister Liu Peng has said the government will support a bid from any of its cities which wants to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Reuters reports that the statement of support comes after the same minister said last month that a Chinese bid to host the event would be "difficult".

Two Chinese cities are believed to have notified the central government of their interest in the event. Harbin, in the north of the country, which hosted the Winter University Games earlier this year, has already submitted a bid proposal to China's State Council. Chuangchun, in Jilin province, is also believed to be interested. Chuangchun hosted the 2007 Asian Winter Games.

"Harbin and Jilin both have had experience in hosting international winter competitions," Liu said at a press conference on Monday. "Whether to bid for Winter Olympics firstly depends on the enthusiasm of the potential host cities. If they are really enthusiastic to bid we will certainly support them."
