Italian football divisions split

Serie A and Serie B, the top two Italian football divisions, are to split in an effort to revive the Italian game’s commercial fortunes, which have slipped behind the English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga in recent years.

The top Italian sides are hoping to emulate the success of England’s Premier League in particular, which has flourished since splitting from the other English Football League divisions in 1992.

Reuters reports that the move has been approved at a meeting of club presidents, and Serie A and B will now be run as separate entities – they were previously managed together – although they will still share a common president. Maurizio Beretta, a former head of Italy’s employers’ association will fill the post.
