Australian bookmaker seeks to break stadium betting monopoly

Australian bookmaker Betstar is seeking to break the monopoly held by rival Tabcorp on live betting at three of Melbourne’s leading sports venues.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Betstar has approached Melbourne Cricket Club, Australian Rules venue Etihad Stadium and Australian Open tennis venue Melbourne Park about operating live betting at the stadiums next year. The move comes after the Australian government relaxed laws on the operations of corporate bookmakers like Betstar.

“Why shouldn't punters be given the opportunity of having a choice in which way they bet, whether it's at the races, the football or the tennis?” said Alan Eskander, the principal of Betstar. “I can't see how or why the State Government would have any objections to my firm going head-to-head with Tabcorp. After all, the Government represents the people and the people are demanding competition in the betting market.''
