Rogge: Sochi on track for 2014

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge has expressed his optimism for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, saying preparations in the Russian city are on track despite budget cuts.

Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Kozak announced last month that the Russian government will slash another 5 per cent off the cost of constructing Sochi Olympic sites in a move to find cheaper building solutions and optimise construction costs.

"We are happy with the level of preparations for Sochi," Rogge said at the World Championships in Berlin. "The city is changing every day. You should never underestimate the capacity of the Russians. We are pleased with the process."

The construction of sports facilities – most of which are being built from scratch - will cost Russia 195.3 billion rubles ($6.25 billion) according to Kozak.

Rogge also urged the five sports that failed to make the IOC shortlist for inclusion in the 2016 Games - squash, baseball, softball, roller sports and karate - not to give up on becoming an Olympic sport in the future.

"I understand their disappointment but in sport there are winners and runners-up," he said. "[They should] think quietly and analyse why they were not selected and have another go. The essence of a competitor is to fall, get up and have another go."
