British Eurosport develops EPG Triggering on Sky

British Eurosport has announced it will become the first UK commercial broadcaster to provide accurate live Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) Triggers to update Sky’s EPG and Now & Next schedules.

The volume of live sport in British Eurosport’s schedule led to regular inconsistencies in the Sky EPG Now & Next information, leaving viewers unable to find events that had overrun via the EPG.

In a deal with Red Bee Media’s EPG Playout Module, live changes in the day’s schedule will now be captured at the transmission stage in British Eurosport’s playout and the updates passed within 500 milliseconds to the Sky platform, directly triggering Sky's scheduling systems.

"We see the EPG as a vital marketing tool in promoting our programming to fans. With over 50% of our channel devoted to live action, especially during daytime, we were delighted to pioneer the real-time triggering development with Red Bee Media to ensure PVR recordings were safe-guarded and viewers were given accurate information about their favourite events," said Dave Kerr, director of British Eurosport.

Red Bee Media has worked closely with British Eurosport’s communications and scheduling departments and its output host Arqiva over the past 18 months to develop the Triggered Accuracy service. This was subjected to the required testing standard by Sky’s EPG and Service Integration team before final release to the digital platform.
