Manchester United heads UEFA Champions League handout list

English Premier League champions Manchester United received almost €7 million more than European Cup holder Barcelona in Champions League broadcasting and marketing revenue for the 2008-09 season, according to data released by UEFA.

The Champions League, Europe’s elite club competition, involves 32 teams and €581.8 million is shared between the teams from UEFA’s revenue pool. The organisation shares a fixed amount of about €300 million between all the teams based on their performance, and the remainder is weighted depending on the “value of each television market represented by the clubs taking part.”

According to the data from Europe’s ruling body for football, Manchester United - which lost 2-0 to the Spanish league winners Barcelona in the final in May - received €37.8 million whereas Barcelona received €31 million.

German side Bayern Munich earned €34.6 million after reaching the quarter-final stage of the competition last season, the second-highest amount because it was the only German team to qualify for the knockout stages.

Chelsea received €30.5 million, the fourth-highest payout, with Italian champions Inter Milan the fifth-highest recipient receiving €28.5 million.

The data does not include match-day merchandise revenue or ticket sales, which are not part of the organisation’s central distribution to competing teams.
