London bombings police head appointed Olympic security director

Sir Ian Johnston, head of the British Transport Police during the 2005 London bombings on July 7, has been appointed security director for the 2012 Olympic Games.

During the Games Sir Ian will be responsible for overseeing security inside Olympic venues, villages and transport and will be the organisers’ central liaison figure with the Olympic security directorate which has been set up by the UK Home Office.

“Security is a vital part of ensuring we host a spectacular and successful event and I am very much looking forward to playing my part in meeting that challenge,” he said.

Last month the UK government approved a further £19 million to strengthen Olympic venues against terrorist attacks, intended to make the venues in Stratford, east London, more blast resilient.

Sir Ian joined the Metropolitan Police in 1965 and has held senior positions both within the Met and with the Kent County Constabulary. He has also been the Association of Chief Police Officers' spokesman on crime for the last five years.
