£20m of contingency spent on 2012 security upgrade

Just under £20 million of contingency funds have been allocated for security modifications to venues at the London 2012 Olympic Park, organisers said yesterday.

Just under £20 million of contingency funds have been allocated for security modifications to venues at the London 2012 Olympic Park, organisers said yesterday.

Over the last three months, £19 million was released to make the venues "more secure and resilient to attacks," according to the July Quarterly Economic Report by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport.

The report said that the money is predominantly being used to “harden modifications to existing structures”. According to Reuters, organisers are reluctant to give details on the modifications but the money has been spent on making all the venues at the east London site more blast resistant.

Olympic minister Tessa Jowell said in a statement that the Olympics still “remains on time and on budget."

The report also said that 65 per cent of the £1.972 billion contingency fund remained untouched. The overall Olympic budget stands at £9.2 billion.
