Athletics’ world governing body is planning a second-tier of events which will feed into the elite Diamond League events being launched next year.

Reuters reports that International Association of Athletics Federations spokesman Nick Davies said the competition would be the same size as the 14-event Diamond League, but that details would only be finalised in the Autumn.

Davies said that Berlin, the most notable venue excluded from the list of Diamond League event venues, would be part of the second-tier.

Also being considered as hosts are Osaka, Japan; Ostrava, Czech Republic; Hengelo, the Netherlands; Melbourne, Australia; Senegalese capital Dakar; Belem, Brazil; Athens or Thessaloniki in Greece; and Rieti, Italy. Davies said Kingston in Jamaica, Daegu in South Korea and a South African and Central American location were also in the mind of the IAAF.
