South African construction workers at 2010 World Cup stadiums who have been on strike have rejected an improved wage offer by employers, but lowered their demands for a pay increase.
The Associated Press reports that National Union of Mineworkers negotiator Bhekani Ngcobo said the workers rejected an 11.5 per cent pay rise, but would accept 12 per cent, down from the 13 per cent originally demanded.
However the AP also reports that there was confusion among striking workers it spoke to as the negotiations which were going on. One worker said that the union would have to speak to its members before accepting a 12 per cent pay rise., and he didn’t think it would go that low.
AP reports that the strike is threatening already tight construction schedules for the World Cup stadiums, which should be completed by December.
